Map features culture places throughout Brazil
A website was launched Friday (May 23) providing a map of the so-called “cultural spots” throughout the country, with updated information on more than 2,700 places for cultural activities that are part of the federal government's Living Culture program (“Programa Cultura Viva”). The initiative was showcased in the National Diversity Web event (“Teia da Diversidade”), providing the most comprehensive cultural data base in Brazil.
The map was designed by a group called “Soy Loco Por Ti”, which focuses on Latin American integration through popular culture and media democracy, and the e-Culture Lab (“Laboratório de Cultura Digital”), which partners with social movements and other agents organized into networks to develop new technologies.
“This is the beginning of a long process of creating a set of tools to drive engagement and digital democracy for the Cultural Spots,” said João Paulo Mehl, responsible for developing the website. He said the project was conducted in an open and collaborative framework, where Cultural Spots themselves can update their data. “Collaborative capabilities are already in operation, and a lot of new features are coming up over the next months,” he promised.
Mehl explained that the map is a long-time demand of cultural producers. “It shows you the locations of the Cultural Spots, so you know where all this cultural diversity comes from.” Users can search by group name, state, or topic on http://culturaviva.org.br/.
