Brazil grants amnesty to teachers persecuted by military regime
The Amnesty Commission made on Wednesday (14) an official apology from the Brazilian government to teachers persecuted by the military regime. The act happened on a thematic session due to Teachers' Day. Three teacher attended the ceremony: Ana Maria Pinho Leite Gordon, Mariluce Moura, and Adriano Diogo. They were granted amnesty and were able to give a testimony about their experiences during the military regime.
Journalist Mariluce Moura was pregnant when she was arrested and "violently tortured" in 1973 in Salvador. She reported that even after being acquitted by the military court, she was dismissed from the Communication's Department of the Federal University of Bahia, where she used to teach.
"It's a history of violence. One after another. This climate of fear and insecurity lasted until we moved back to democracy. The struggle for recognition of what happened and of the violence the state used, when tortured, killed and denied all rights has not ended yet," declared the professor.
Geologist Adriano Diogo used to teach science in a state school when he was arrested and tortured in 1973. He will receive an economic compensation, but believes that the most important would be to review the Amnesty Law in Brazil in order to have state officials held accountable for the crimes committed during the military regime.
"The problem is that crimes from the past are a cover-up of the ones from the present. Past impunity perpetuates the modus operandi of the present. It does not mean that there was a golden generation, a super strong one, because each generation will react according to its historical context. The problem is that 21 years of state of exception have not been reviewed, judged, or even analyzed," stated Diogo.
The Amnesty Commission, established by the Ministry of Justice in 2001, works to repair the political activists persecuted during the military regime in Brazil. Until January 2015, the commission had received more than 74,000 requests for amnesty, and had granted amnesty to more than 43,000 political activists, both with and without economic compensation.
