Government reiterates commitment with economy
Brazil's Finance Minister Guido Mantega reiterated during a press conference held Monday (Oct 27) the government's commitment to strengthen the fundamentals of the Brazilian economy for the next 4 years, keeping inflation under control and generating jobs in an expanding labor market.
“Surely, in order to maintain employment, we must keep stimulating investments and strengthening Brazilian companies, with the expansion of the capital market. We must keep the financial market solid, as it finances the growth in the economy and in consumption,” Mantega stated.
Mantega believes Brazil is facing the great challenge of fostering the resumption of development amid the current international crisis. “This can only be achieved through the cooperation of workers and investors side by side with the government, so we can enter a new cycle in Brazilian economy,” he said.
Mantega seemed satisfied with the re-election of President Dilma Rousseff in the second-round runoff. “It proves that the population has approved of our economic policy,” he remaked, adding that the elections did bring volatility into the market. He went on to stress, however, that the impact of external factors must not be disregarded. “There's been a sharp decline in commodities, and the Stock Exchange has been affected, but, with the end of the elections, this scenario will grow less adverse,” he argued.
“The confidence displayed by the foreign investor is once again improving. Foreign investors, who consider the medium- and long-term scenarios, are more confident, because they're putting their money in Brazil. The economy is growing again, and all indications are that it should keep doing so in the third and forth quarters,” Mantega stated.
