Job creation a record low for January in six years
Dismissals in January outnumbered the workers recruited in the period, reports the General Register of the Employed and Unemployed (Caged, in its Portuguese acronym), released by the Ministry of Labor and Employment Friday (Feb 27). A total of 1,600,094 admissions were reported, compared to 1,681,868 terminations.
The negative balance, 81,774 jobs, was the lowest outcome for a January since 2009, when a deficit of 101,700 formal openings was observed.
Labor Minister Manoel Dias ascribes the figures to seasonal factors. “Sectors with a traditionally higher number of dismissals during this time of year, for reasons like the end of vacations, saw the most significant reductions in job openings,” he says in a note.
According to Caged, retail sales saw a reduction of 97,887 jobs (down 1.25%) against January last year. The wholesale business, in turn, held steady, with a net 87 positions.
Services faced losses in both bars and restaurants, and hotels. Overall, the sector is reported to have killed 7,141 formal jobs.
The study further shows agriculture with a positive 9,428. “The performance was also better than it was in 2014 and 2013,” the Ministry of Labor said.
