Priorities to remain unchanged despite fiscal adjustment, Rousseff says
President Dilma Rousseff said Monday (Jun 22) that the allocation of $929.62 million under the 2015/2016 Family Farming Plan (Plano Safra da Agricultura Familiar, in the original Portuguese) shows that, despite the adjustments in the public accounts, the government should maintain its priorities. “We've made the adjustment, yes, but an adjustment that takes into account the fact that we're fully capable of taking a step forward,” Rousseff said in her speech during the ceremony.
The president noted that the government has been successful in removing the nation from the hunger map as drawn by FAO (UN Food and Agriculture Organization) and initiated the process of modernizing family farming. “We'll move forward. I'm fully confident about the competence of the field workers,” she added.
While announcing the changes in the rules for selling family farming goods, Rousseff stressed that the new regulations will provide small producers with access to a consumer market comprising 200 million Brazilians, as they distinguish between small-scale agricultural industries and large companies, and lay down specific quality rules for the sector.
As an example, Agrarian Development Minister Patrus Ananias mentioned small producers who “will be able to produce with quality and observe sanitary requirements, with no fears, as the legislation, now adapted to the reality of family farming, will assist and protect them.”
During the same ceremony, Rousseff signed decrees on the recognition of ten quilombola territories.
