After a day hit by heavy volatility, during which the US currency came to surpass R$ 4.20, the dollar fell back to below R$ 4.00, closing the Thursday (Sep. 24) down 3.73% to R$ 3.99.

During the day, the exchange rate reached as high as R$ 4.248, but took once again a downward trend after Central Bank President Alexandre Tombini announced the financial institution was considering selling dollars from the country's international reserves into the cash market, which has not been done since February, 2009.

The Central Bank also renewed 9.4 thousand currency swap deals (a move equivalent to selling dollars into the future market), with maturity dates on October, and auctioned 20 thousand new agreements due on September 1, 2016.
