Brazil's industrial production down 1.2% in August, compared with July, the third consecutive negative result. The country's industrial park ended the first eight months of the year with a year-to-date decline of 6.9%. The annual rate (for the last twelve months) fell 5.7%. Data on the Monthly Survey on Industry were released today (Oct. 2) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Among the broader industrial classifications, also when compared with July, the largest drops were registered in capital goods, down 7.6%; and durable consumer goods, down 4%. In the first case, there was lower production of trucks; and in the second case, lower production of household appliances and cars, which were affected by the collective vacations granted to several production units.

In the case of the sectors, the sharpest decline in August affected especially the production of car, trailers, and car bodies, down 9.4%, other declines were reported as follows: metal products (3%), leather products, travel items and footwear (3.6%), and machinery, appliances and electrical materials (2.5%).
