Unemployment 8.7% up in June-August quarter
Brazil's unemployment rate has gone up again, and closed out the quarter ending in August at 8.7%. The figure is 0.6 percentage points higher than in the quarter ended in May (8.1%). This has been the highest unemployment rate in the time series that began in 2012.
Compared to the same period last year (6.9%), the increase was 1.8 percentage points. The data is part of the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Continuous PNAD) released today (Oct. 29) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
According to the survey, the unemployed population grew 7.9%, reaching 8.8 million people, 647,000 more than in the March-May quarter. Compared to the third quarter 2014, it was up 29.6% (2 million more people).
The employed population in June-August was 92.1 million people, having remained stable both over the previous quarter and over June-August 2014. The number of people with formal employment contracts fell 1.2% (down 425,000 people) in relation to March-May 2015 and 3% (down 1.1 million people) compared to the same quarter 2014.
The average monthly income dropped 1.1% adjusted for inflation compared to the previous quarter (March to May), going from $490.00 to $485.00., but remained stable compared to June-August 2014.
