Brazil's unemployment rate closed out the third quarter (July–September) 2015 at 8.9%, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reported today (Nov. 24) in its Continuous National Household Sample Survey – Quarterly (Continuous PNAD). This is the highest rate since the time series began in 2012.
The Q3 rate was an increase from both the previous quarter (April–June 2015), when the unemployment rate had been 8.3%, and the third quarter of 2014 (6.8%).
Brazil's unemployed population reached 9 million people in September, whereas the employed population was 92.1 million people. Also according to the survey, about 35.4 million people were working under formal employment contracts in the private sector in the third quarter.
