President Dilma Rousseff said today (21) that in order to strengthen Mercosur, it would be necessary to promote more agile forms of trade cooperation and to form international supply chains. "Our decision to economically and commercially strengthen the bloc by removing trade barriers expresses our long term commitment to Mercosur. Brazil will pledge to successfully complete this task. I'm sure we all realize the importance of removing trade barriers so that  Mercosur can be successful,” she said when addressing the 49th Summit of Heads of State of Mercosur and Associated States in Asuncion, Paraguay.

For Rousseff, the bloc needs to solve the issue of "regional disparities" that she believes will only be possible by encouraging trade cooperation and mostly by building these supply chains.

"Contemporary economics is dynamic. We need to adapt ourselves to the changes at the risk of compromising our companies' competitiveness and our economies' attractiveness to investors," she reported when defending the adoption by 2016 of the revised protocol for Mercosur's government purchases. According to the president, the investment facilitation will bring back jobs and help overcome the current economic difficulties.

Economic crisis

Also during her speech at the Summit, the president declared that despite the countercyclical measures taken by Brazil to protect the economy from the economic crisis, the global slow recovery and especially savage cuts in commodity prices, combined with internal factors, have affected the Brazilian cyclical growth.

"Our economy has solid foundations. We have vast reserves and our financial situation is under control. I am sure that after reorganizing the fiscal scenario in Brazil we will soon have positive results, together with overcoming the political crisis that has affected my second term of office since the beginning," she said. The president ensured that Brazil is determined to reduce inflation, achieve macroeconomic stability, enhance confidence in the economy, and ensure a solid and long-lasting recovery to growth.

Argentine president

After extolling the construction and consolidation of democracy after "years of authoritarianism" in the region, Rousseff gave the presidential election in Argentina and the parliamentary in Venezuela as examples. "Two recent examples that show our maturity," she pointed out.

President Dilma Rousseff has welcomed new Argentine President Mauricio Macri, participating for the first time in a meeting of the bloc. "I want to congratulate especially President Macri. I want to welcome him. I wish him success. Argentina is one of the axes of our regional organization," she noted.
