Banco do Brasil earns recognition in Davos
For the second time, Banco do Brasil (BB) has been listed in the Global 100 ranking of businesses with the best corporate sustainability practices around the world. The listing was released by Corporate Knights magazine on Thursday (Jan. 21), during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Banco do Brasil ranked 75th among 4,608 businesses. The first time it featured in the ranking was in 2013, in 100th place.
Germany carmaker topped the 2016 ranking. Natura cosmetics company was the only other Brazilian company in this year's list, ranked 61st.
The choice of the world's 100 most sustainable businesses is based on financial data, sustainability reports, and direct contact with shortlisted businesses trading on stock exchanges, whose market capitalization exceeds $2 billion.
Businesses are rated for 12 different industry-specific performance indicators, including energy efficiency, carbon emissions, innovation, water efficiency, waste management, taxes paid, health and safety performance, etc.
According to Osmar Dias, Vice-President for Agribusiness and Small Businesses at Banco do Brasil, this is a very significant achievement considering that the role of the bank in promoting sustainable practices “is strategic for the sustainability of a number of businesses, farmers, business leaders, and other players who learn how social and environmental issues are key to their economic development.”
According to José Mauricio Coelho, Vice-President of Financial Management, the recognition of the bank's excellence in adopting sustainable practices “shows its commitment to creating value for stakeholders and the society in a sustainable way.”
Based in Toronto, Canada, Corporate Knights (CK) is a financial information media and research company that publishes information on corporate responsibility and sustainable development. Created by CK in 2005, the Global 100 ranking is announced every year at the World Economic Forum.
