The sector closed out November with 2.9 million employees working under formal job contracts Antonio Cruz/Agência Brasil

The building industry slashed 514,000 jobs across the country in the 12 months ending in November 2015, according to a survey by the Building Industry Union of São Paulo State (SINDUSCON-SP) and Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV) released today (Jan. 13). The sector closed out that month with 2.9 million employees working under formal job contracts.

Hirings dropped 2% compared to October, with 61,300 jobs lost.

According to SINDUSCON, the significant employment decline in November reflects both the seasonal effect of job cuts in the last two months of the year and a slowing momentum for the construction industry. “With no new projects for immediate execution and no confidence growth on the horizon, builders continue to fire workers,” said Eduardo Zaidan, the union's economics vice-president.

Regional breakdown

The sharpest percentage drop in employment was in the North region (-5.13%), where 9,190 jobs were cut. But the Southeast saw the largest decline in absolute numbers, losing 29,640 jobs (-1.95%).

In São Paulo state, 12,800 jobs were cut from October to November. In the period from January to November, employment levels were down 7.77%, leaving the industry with 776,400 formal jobs.
