The unemployment rate for the three-month period ending in February this year was estimated at 10.2% in the country—1.2 percentage points higher than the quarter ending in November 2015 (9%). The value also surpasses its year-earlier counterpart, reported then at 7.4%. The amount of jobless people in Brazil today totals approximately 10.4 million.

The data were released today (20) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in the Continuous version of PNAD, the National Household Sample Survey. The figure is the highest result for the time series initiated in 2012, and the first time it enters a two-digit phase.

The survey indicates that unemployed added up to 10.4 million people at the end of February—up 13.8% against the three-month period between September and November last year, an increase of 1.4 million people. In the comparison with the same quarter last year  (December, January and February), the surge in joblessness stands at 40.1% (3 million more people).

The IBGE found that, at the end of the quarter ending in February, the employed amounted to 91.1 million people, down 1.1% from the September-November quarter in 2015 (1 million fewer people). Compared with the same quarter in 2015, the decline reached 1.3% (1.2 million fewer people).

Indicators in the Continuous PNAD are calculated for three-month spans with data from the three months prior to the conduction of the survey. The rate for the quarter ending in February 2016 was estimated with data collected in December 2015, January 2016, and February 2016.
