Acting President Michel Temer appointed economist Maria Silvia Bastos Marques to head the state-led Brazilian Social Development Bank (BNDES), replacing Luciano Coutinho.

Maria Sílvia Bastos, who chaired the Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (Brazilian steel-maker company) between 1999 and 2002, is the first woman to become an important member of the government after the all-male ministerial staff had been announced.
