Inflation, gauged by the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), rose again, reaching 0.78% in May, up 0.17 percentage point compared with April, which was 0.61%. Data for the IPCA, which indicate Brazil's official inflation, were released Wednesday (Jun. 8), by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics.
The cumulative 12-month IPCA (annual rate) stood at 9.32%, slightly above the 9.28% reached in the preceding twelve months.
The main contribution to the rise in the index in May was made by the group housing, which rose 1.79%, and contributed 0.27 percentage points to the IPCA of May. The main reason for the rise in the group were water and sewage rate, up 10.37%. This item reported the biggest individual contribution in the month, with 0.15 percentage point.
Also in the group housing, other important items pressured IPCA in the month: electricity (2.28%), workforce for minor repairs (0.87%), cleaning products (0.85%) and condominium fee (0.79%). Electricity, up 2.28%, also pressured the group housing.
