Airlines registered a 5.9% reduction in the demand for domestic flight last June compared to June 2015. The value takes into account the number of tickets sold, the distance flown, discounts for crew members, courtesy and free trips. It was the 11th consecutive decline and the worst result for a June since 2012, the Brazilian Association of Airlines (ABEAR) announced Tuesday (Jul. 19).

The estimated supply, based on the number of seats available and the distance covered, fell 6.4%. Passenger flow, in turn, was down 7% to 6.8 million trips. Figures encompass airlines Avianca, Azul, Gol, and Latam, which account for 99% of the Brazilian domestic market.

The first semester accumulated a 6.6% slide in demand and 5.9% in supply. Passenger flow dropped 8% in 43.2 million trips.

International flights

The survey further reveals that international transport has interests adding up to 25% of the market—the remainder operated by foreign carriers. The demand for international trips fell 5.1%, the most significant plunge of the last four months, whereas the semester saw a 0.3% slip. Supply, in turn, was down 8%, and international trips grew 2% from June 2015, to 558.4 thousand.

According to a note released by the association, there has been a trend favoring the search for shorter trips, bringing South American destinations into the limelight.
