The Brazilian government issued a statement Friday (Dec. 9) ruling out any possibility of lowering the retirement eligibility age proposed by the Constitution amendment bill on Brazil's pension reform, set at 65 years for both men and women. The government submitted the bill to Congress last Monday (5).

The presidency argued that the 65-year age requirement was based on Brazil's aging statistics and is central in its strategy to balance government spending on pensions in the future. “The government will work with its allies in Congress to ensure that the original bill for the reform is approved unchanged,” the statement read.

The bill will be discussed by the Chamber of Deputies' Committee on Constitution and Justice next week.
