The unemployment rate is still on the rise, and closed out the three-month period ending in January at 12.6%, up 0.8 percentage points from the 11.8% reported for August-October last year. With the increase of the last quarter, the country has a total 12.9 million unemployed.

The figures were released today (Feb 24) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) as part of the Continuous PNAD (National National Household Sample Survey). This is the highest unemployment rate in the time series started in 2012 and also the largest number of unemployed individuals in history.
