Brazil joblessness down to 13% in the second quarter this year
Unemployment closed out the second quarter of the year down in 11 of the 27 Brazilian states. The rate—13% of the so-called economically active population—accounts for 13.5 million of unemployed people.
The data can be found in the National Household Sample Survey (Continuous PNAD) for April, May and June, compared to the three-month period immediately preceding it. They were released today (Aug 17), in Rio de Janeiro, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
In the view of Cimar Azeredo, IBGE coordinator for labor and income, “the states that reported in increase in unemployment failed to see the enough amount of job openings to cope with the growth in the demand for employment.”
Employed population
In the same quarter, the employed population (90.2 million Brazilians) was comprised by 68% of employed, 4.6% of employers, 24.9% of autonomous workers, and 2.4% of people who help family members in their work without pay.
