Economist Campos Neto takes office as Central Bank president
Economist Roberto Campos Neto took office today (Feb. 28) as president of Brazil’s Central Bank during a private meeting at the Planalto presidential palace. He is replacing Ilan Goldfajn, who had led the institution since June 2016.
Campos Neto, appointed by President Jair Bolsonaro, was among the ones who devised the government’s economic policy and was a member of the Brazilian team at the World Economic Forum, in Davos, Switzerland, held in January this year. Last Tuesday (26), Neto was questioned by the Senate’s Commission for Economic Affairs, in the morning, and had his name approved by the commission members. His name was also approved later on by a plenary session in the upper house.
During the questioning, Campos Neto argued for the autonomy of the Central Bank and pledged to work to stabilize the population’s purchasing power and ensure a solid and efficient financial power.
