Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply reported that the Brazilian market of organic food rose $1 billion in revenues last year, up 20 percent from 2017. The figures were released by Brazilian Council of Organic and Sustainable Production (Organis), which brings together 60 companies in the sector.

Brazil comes up in the research as the leader of the organic food market in Latin America. However, considering the area of the land dedicated to organic agriculture, the country ranks third in the region, after Argentina and Uruguay, and 12th worldwide.

In Latin America, production encompasses eight million hectares, which corresponds to 11 percent of the world’s area dedicated to the production of organic foods. Taking into account the extension of the dedicated territory, Brazil grew over 204 thousand hectares in ten years, reaching 1.1 million hectares in 2017.

Global market

The global market of organic food, led by the US, Germany, France, and China, accounts for the circulation of a record-breaking $97 billion in 2017. The figure comes from Organics International (IFOAM).

Some 3 million organic producers are reported across 181 countries. Organic production increased in every continent and reached a new record, 70 thousand hectares.
