Brazil is expected to post a record-breaking harvest for cereals, legumes, and oleaginous plants in 2021, according to January estimates by the government’s statistics institute IBGE. The country should produce 262.2 million tons, up 3.2 percent from last year.

The January estimate for this year is 0.7 percent higher (another 1,7 million tons) than the estimate made in December last year.

Based on the area harvested, it should be 66.8 million tons, up 2.1 percent from the amount reported last year.

Among the main crops, growths are expected in the production of soybeans (7.2%), which should add up to 130.3 million tons; corn (0.4%), which is likely to stand at 103.7 million tons; beans (4.1%); and broom-corn (0.1%).

On the other hand, declines are expected for the harvest of rice (-0.6%), which should reach 11 million tons; upland cotton crops (16.5%), which should amount to 5.9 million tons; and the harvest of wheat (-6.5%).

Other products

In addition to cereals, legumes, and oleaginous plants, IBGE also makes forecasts for other important agricultural products in the country. In 2021, expansions are expected in the harvest of orange (0.8%), which should total 15.8 million tones; grape (13.1%); banana (3.2%); and tomato (1.2%).

Conversely, the year should close with reductions in the production of sugar cane (-1.6%), which should stand at 667 million tons; coffee (-27.3%), manioc, and potato (both down 0.8%).
