Brazil gov’t receives suggestions on green carbon production
Agencies, entities, individuals, and companies interested in voluntarily help outline criteria for green carbon production, accounting, and trade in Brazil may submit suggestions to the country’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply until April 11.
The move aims to stimulate the development of a voluntary market for green carbon credits in Brazil, with criteria meeting the special needs and features of domestic farming, in compliance with the guidelines of the National Policy for Green Carbon in Farming.
Serving as a currency in the Carbon Market, carbon credit allows countries as well as public and private entities to be paid for implementing initiatives that reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide.
Those behind initiatives such as reforestation projects or efforts to promote the substitution of fossil fuels for clean and renewable energy sources receive a credit for each ton of carbon their enterprises prevent from being released into the atmosphere. Nations that succeed in slashing emissions and meeting global targets can “sell” credit to countries that have failed to meet their goals.
The initial proposals were published on the March 11, the day the consultation was opened. Suggestions for changes or additions should be submitted as an editable spreadsheet, and sent to cgpa.decap@agro.gov.br.
