Brazil negotiates increase in potassium imports from Jordan

Brazilian Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply Marcos Montes on Saturday (April 7) visited the Arab Potassium Company (APC) in Jordan, where he expressed his expectation about the import increase of this important fertilizer for Brazilian agriculture.
During the delegation´s visit to the factory, which produces more than 2.4 million tons of potassium per year, Montes met with the company's president Maen Nsour, who expressed interest in expanding fertilizer sales to Brazil.
“This visit is a sign that we will have a long-term strategic commercial relationship,” said Nsour, praising the potential of the Brazilian market for the product. “Brazil is important because it works for the world's food security,” said the businessman.
According to the Brazilian ministry, Jordan is the world's seventh-largest potassium producer, and APC is the world's eighth-largest producer in volume. APC's factory is located 110 km south of Amman, where the company produces four types of potassium: standard, fine, granular, and industrial.
“We are making arrangements for the factory to continue supplying potassium to Brazil. We are currently receiving a reasonable amount and next year we will receive approximately 500 thousand tons. Who knows, in two or three years we will receive more than 1 million tons from this company,” said the Brazilian minister during his visit to APC.
Montes has shown himself optimistic about the ongoing negotiations since the Jordanian company will open an office in Brazil to promote the relationship between both countries.
According to the Agriculture Ministry, Brazil imports around 85 percent of all fertilizer used in the local agricultural production. In the case of potassium, the imported percentage is around 95 percent.
Brazil is the fourth-largest potassium consumer in the world. In 2021 the country imported over 41 million tons of the product for about $ 14 billion dollars.
In the coming days, the Brazilian agriculture delegation shall visit Egypt and Morocco, also to negotiate the supply of fertilizers and the expansion of investments in Brazil.
