The service sector in Brazil grew 0.9% in September and reached the fifth positive result in a row. The accumulated gain in the period was 4.9%, according to data from the Monthly Service Survey (PMS) released today (11) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

If compared to September 2021, the volume of services rose 9.7%. There was expansion in all five activities and growth in 63.3% of the 166 types of services investigated. In the year, the accumulated volume of services advanced 8.6% compared to the same period in 2021. In 12 months, it went from 9% in August to 8.9% in September, and remained on the downward trajectory that began in April 2022, when it registered 12.8%.

"This higher frequency of positive rates correlates with the return of face-to-face activities, such as services provided to households, car rental, some tourist activities and transportation," says the survey manager, Rodrigo Lobo. He also pointed out that the renewal of the historical series is also due to "business-oriented services", and added that the transport sector and the information and communication sector combined reached 65.8% of the sector.

Among the 27 Brazilian states, 19 followed the national sector's advance and increased the volume of services in September 2022 when compared to August. The most relevant highlights were in Rio de Janeiro (0.7%), Santa Catarina (2.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (1%), and São Paulo (0.1%). The main negative influence was Paraná with a drop of 2.3%, followed by Pernambuco, with a retreat of 1.6% and Minas Gerais, of 0.2%.
