Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and China’s President Xi Jinping, signed 15 trade and partnership agreements in Beijing on Friday (Apr. 14). Lula was welcomed at the Great Hall of the People, the seat of the Chinese government.

The leaders participated in an extended meeting with ministers and advisers from both countries and also held a private meeting. Besides bilateral topics, they discussed attempts to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. A dinner in honor of Lula was also hosted by Xi Jinping.

The deals forged between the two nations include space cooperation, research and innovation, digital economy, efforts against hunger, communication exchange, and trade facilitation.

One of the compacts outlines the development of CBERS-6, the sixth in a line of satellites built as part of the bilateral partnership. The new model is innovative as it can monitor biomes such as the Amazon rainforest even when the weather is cloudy, the Brazilian government reported.

Certification

Other documents focus on the certification of products of animal origin as well as sanitary and quarantine requirements that must be followed by slaughterhouses for meat exports from Brazil to China. Brazil is the largest supplier of beef to the Asian country, with 60 percent of the Brazilian production being sold to China.

The business sector also unveiled 20 new arrangements between the two countries in areas such as renewable energy, automotive industry, agribusiness, green credit lines, IT, health care, and infrastructure.

These accords come in addition to those announced on March 29 during the Brazil–China Economic Seminar, totaling over 40 new joint ventures. President Lula was supposed to make this trip late last month, during the seminar, but case of pneumonia forced him to postpone the state visit.

“In the tourism sector, we note the inclusion of Brazil in the list of destinations authorized for travel by Chinese tourist groups, which represents a great opportunity for the growth of the influx of visitors between the two countries,” the ministry stated.

Before signing the compacts, Lula and the Brazilian delegation participated in a flower-laying ceremony at the Monument to the People’s Heroes, at the Tiananmen Square.
