Brazil’s unemployment rate sank to eight percent in the quarter ending in June—the lowest for the period since 2014. The change is a 0.8 percentage point decline from the previous quarter (8.8%), January–March. Against the second quarter of 2022 (9.3%), the proportion was down 1.3 percentage points. The data were released by statistics bureau IBGE.

During the second quarter of 2023, some 8.6 million people were without jobs countrywide. Meanwhile, employed people totaled 98.9 million—up 1.1 percent from the previous quarter and 0.7 percent from the same span last year.

“Striking on the employment front is the expansion of workers in public administration, defense, social security, education, human health, and social services—both quarterly and annually,” said IBGE survey coordinator Adriana Beringuy.
