Brazil launches platform to attract green investments
Brazilian and foreign investors now have access to a platform to select environmental and social projects for financing. On Wednesday (Oct. 23), in Washington, D.C., Finance Minister Fernando Haddad and Environment Minister Marina Silva launched the Climate and Ecological Transformation Investment Platform, named BIP.
The launch took place during a side event at the 4th meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank heads, representing the 19 largest global economies, along with the European Union and African Union.
The platform will feature projects validated by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), all receiving a "green seal." This certification guarantees the projects' alignment with the Ecological Transformation Plan.
“The platform represents the culmination of a year and a half of efforts by the Ministry of Finance, opening new horizons for Brazil's climate agenda. It marks the completion of efforts to build regulatory and financial frameworks for green financing and paves the way for a new wave of investments,” said Haddad.
Marina Silva highlighted that the selected projects will align with both the Ecological Transformation Plan, aimed at achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, and the Climate Plan, which outlines strategies for combating climate change by 2035. “This platform is one of the results of the task force for global mobilization against climate change, an innovation brought about by Brazil's G20 presidency,” the minister stated.
Haddad emphasized that the tool's key achievement is its ability to connect investors, public and private financiers, and global financial institutions. “The platform unites financing with projects, bridging the gap between funding and green initiatives, including international resources, to drive the green economy forward,” said the minister.
