Most Brazilian workers (56%) take a packed lunch or a snack to eat at work. The figure can be found in a survey entitled Panorama da Alimentação no Trabalho (“Panorama of Food at Work”), by the QualiBest Institute and commissioned by Sapore, a Brazilian multinational food service provider. Of the total, 42 percent said they take a packed lunch to work. The remaining 14 percent bring snacks.

The study heard 816 people from all regions of Brazil and was presented yesterday (Oct. 30) during the 2nd Seminar of the Brazilian Association of Collective Meals (Aberc), held in São Paulo. For this poll, workers were able to choose more than one option.

According to the study, another 31 percent of respondents said they bought packed lunches or snacks on the street, 28 percent said they used meal vouchers, 21 percent used corporate restaurants, and seven percent said they did not eat at work.

The survey focused on understanding how workers eat in corporate restaurants. It found that 87 percent of those interviewed consider corporate restaurants to be a great benefit for workers.

The collective meals sector, Aberc stated, generates more than BRL 21 billion in the Brazilian economy every year, feeding more than 37 million people in companies, hospitals, and public as well as private educational institutions.

Spending

The survey also showed that 45 percent of Brazilian workers spend between BRL 220 and BRL 440 a month on food at work. Another 18 percent answered that they spend between BRL 450 and BRL 660 and 23 percent said they do not spend any money because they have access to corporate restaurants.

The survey showed that the set menu consisting of rice, beans, protein, and a side dish, is the preference of 77 percent of workers. This is said to show that workers are looking for a balanced diet.
