Rio de Janeiro accounts for 74% of Brazil's natural gas production
Rio de Janeiro now accounts for 74 percent of Brazil's natural gas production, setting a new record in the seventh edition of the Gas Perspectives in Rio 2024-2025 study by the Federation of Industries of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Firjan). While national average daily production grew by 1 percent in 2024, reaching 151 million cubic meters per day (m³/day), the state’s production surged 6 percent, reaching 113 million m³/day.
“The federation has made natural gas one of its strategic pillars for developing Rio's industry and economy. Our state is the country’s natural gas hub, driving the decarbonization of our economy, boosting the competitiveness of local industries, and enhancing both state and national energy security,” said Firjan President Luiz Césio Caetano.
The study highlights a 46 percent increase in national reserves in 2023, driven by fields in state waters. Rio now holds 72 percent of the national reserves, with 372 billion m³ of the total 517 billion m³ in the country.
"2024 was a milestone year for the gas market, characterized by significant progress in the opening of the free natural gas market. The shift of industries to the free market is not only feasible but essential for sustainable economic growth. Industries are demanding the right to explore market solutions that enhance competitiveness, with the freedom to choose their suppliers," said the federation's president.
