Brazil occupies seventh place in the ranking of 40 countries that presented economic growth data for 2024. The list is drawn up by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), known as the rich countries club—as it brings together nations with the world’s most advanced economies.

In 2024, the Brazilian economy grew 3.4 percent, according to the statistic bureau IBGE.

Countries

The OECD has 38 countries, and Brazil is not a full member, but has begun the process of joining. The organization listed information on the growth of the GDP of 40 countries, including non-members Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa.

Chile, Greece, Luxembourg, and New Zealand are part of the OECD, but were not listed because they have not yet released data for 2024.

Comparison

India, the globe’s most populous country—with over 1.4 billion inhabitants—leads the ranking with an annual rate of 6.7 percent. China and Indonesia follow, both with a five percent increase.

The first country in the Americas to appear in the ranking is Costa Rica, which grew by 4.3 percent in 2024. The US, the world’s largest economy, has the 11th highest growth rate (2.8%).

Brazil’s GDP expansion was higher than the average of the OECD countries, the European Union, and the Group of Seven most industrialized countries in the world—Germany, Canada, the US, France, Italy, Japan, and the UK.

Among the first countries to form the BRICS (group of emerging nation—Brazil, Russia, China, India, and South Africa), Brazil is only ahead of South Africa.

Five countries showed a drop in GDP, including Germany (-0.2%), Europe’s largest economy.
