Brazil wins gold and silver at Math Olympiad
Brazilian students Murilo Corato Zanarella, from São Paulo, and Alessandro de Oliveira Pacanowski, from Rio de Janeiro, have won the gold medals at the Iberoamerican Mathematical Olympiad. They were members of the Brazilian squad, which was also awarded with two silvers in the competition, held in San Pedro Sula, in Honduras.
Zanarella got the highest score possible—42 points—, while gold-winning Pacanowski had 38 points. Daniel Lima Braga and Ana Karoline Carneiro, for their part, both from Fortaleza, Ceará, bagged silvers with a score of 31 and 29, respectively. The Brazilian team was headed by teachers Carlos Gustavo Moreira and Marcelo Tadeu Sales.
The Iberoamerican Mathematical Olympiad is the most important tournament of its kind for the countries in the region, and aims to encourage the study of mathematics as a tool for technical and scientific progress. This year's competition gathered 82 young contestants from 22 nations.
The participants took the tests individually, with problems ranging from algebra and number theory to geometry and combinatorics. Brazil is the country with the largest number of awards in the competition: from 1985 up to this day, the South American country won 105 medals, 53 of which gold, 41 silver, and 11 bronze.
