Brazil’s Ana Marcela Cunha now 5-time champion in 25km swimming race

This is her 2nd gold and 3rd time on the podium in the championship

Ana Marcela Cunha made history at lake Lupa, Budapest, Hungary, this Thursday (Jun 30). For the fifth time in a row, the 30-year-old athlete from Bahia bagged the gold medal in the 25-km swimming marathon race at the World Aquatics Championship. Cibelle Jungblut, 19, from Rio Grande do Sul state, finished in 13th place.

“It’s so thrilling! I had extremely tough days before getting here. I didn’t know whether I’d be able to come to this world championship. I’d like to thank everyone who helped me recover so I could be here to represent Brazil and win these three medals,” Cunha said. Her statement was published on the website of Brazil’s water sports confederation CBDA.

In the men’s 25-kilometer race, Rio’s Bruce Hanson left the race on the penultimate lap, struggling with shoulder pain. The victory was won by Italian Dario Verani, with 5h02min21s50—one second and 20 hundredths ahead of French Axel Reymond, who took silver. The bronze went to Hungarian Peter Galicz.
