São Paulo’s Beatriz Haddad broke the record yet again on Monday (Jun. 5) by beating Spain’s Sara Sorribes by two sets to one, sending Brazil back to the quarterfinals of Roland Garros.
A Brazilian had not gone this far on the Parisian clay since 2004 with Gustavo Kuerten. Among the women, Haddad put an end to an even greater hiatus, equaling the feat pulled by Maria Esther Bueno, who ranked among the top eight at the US Open in 1968.
Currently number 12 in the world, Bia should compete again on Wednesday (7) against Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur (in seventh place) for a spot in the semifinals. The two have faced each other twice, with Jabeur winning on both occasions.
