Brazilian athlete Isaac Souza, 24, secured the second Olympic spot for Brazil in the upcoming Paris 2024 Games. The achievement came on Friday (Jul. 21) as he advanced to the final of the 10m platform event at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. Souza should dive again on Saturday (22), the last day of the competition.

“It’s another Olympic Games for my career. I knew it would be a tough competition, so I had to give my all to secure the spot. Now, there’s the final on Saturday, and I ask for all the support and cheers from everyone in Brazil,” said Souza, who also represented Brazil in the Tokyo Olympics and won the bronze medal at the 2019 Pan-American Games in Lima, Peru.

The moment is milestone in Souza’s career, as it is the first time he qualifies for a World Championship final, finishing in 11th place with 418.95 points among the 12 advancing athletes. In the two previous editions of the competition—in Gwangju, South Korea, in 2019; and Budapest, Hungary, in 2022—Issac narrowly missed the medal round, finishing 13th and 15th respectively.

In addition to the men’s 10m platform final, Brazil will also be vying for a podium spot in the mixed synchronized 3m springboard final, with Anna Lúcia dos Santos and Rafael Max.

The Olympic qualification in Fukuoka is not individual, but belongs to the country. Only in 2024 will the team representing Brazil in the Paris Olympics be officially disclosed.
