Brazil beat Italy in men’s volleyball, secure place at Paris Olympics
The Brazilian men’s volleyball team beat Italy three sets to two and secured their place at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The victory took place at the Maracanãzinho gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro, in the final round of the pre-Olympics on Sunday morning (Oct. 8).
Brazil won the first and fourth sets, 25–23 and 25–17. Italy were ahead in the second and third sets, 25–23 and 25–15. The tie-breaker went to the Brazilians, 15–11. The result saw the country finish second in Group A, behind Germany.
Shortly after celebrating the victory over the reigning world champions, Renan Dal Zotto announced he was stepping down as coach of the team. He had been in charge of the Brazilian volleyball team since 2017 and won the World Grand Champions Cup in his first year as coach as well as the World Cup in 2019. In the campaign for the 2021 Nations League title, he was still recovering from COVID-19 and Carlos Schwanke was the coach.
