CONMEBOL fines Peru soccer club for racism
The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) has announced that it is going to fine Peruvian club Real Garcilaso $12,000 for racist behavior.
On February 12, Paulo César Fonseca “Tinga”, an Afro-Brazilian midfielder playing for Cruzeiro, was taunted by fans of Real Garcilaso during a match for Copa Libertadores in Peru. The home crowd would shout monkey chants whenever Tinga touched the ball. The case sparked outrage within and beyond the sports world, prompting regret statements from FIFA president Joseph Blatter, as well as the presidents of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, and Peru, Ollanta Humala.
In a statement on Monday (Mar. 24), CONMEBOL's Disciplinary Tribunal said the confederation “reiterates its commitment to combat all forms of discrimination and racist incidents in their competitions.” The tribunal warned that any repeat incidents could prompt it to shut down Real Garcilaso's stadium.
Additionally, CONMEBOL announced that it filed a disciplinary proceeding against Real Garcilaso seven days after the incident took place, based on provisions of the confederation's disciplinary code on racism. Potential sanctions include closed-door matches, loss of home field advantage, scoring sanctions, or even elimination from the competition.
