Rio de Janeiro - Doctors stage a protest to expose poor working conditions and the precarious state of hospitalsTânia Rêgo/Agência Brasil

In Brazil, medical professionals celebrated the World Health Day by staging protests all over the country for better salaries and work conditions, especially in the public sector.

In order to draw public attention, doctors in Rio de Janeiro have suspended the service of patients in health plans, keeping only emergency services available. Around 200 demonstrators gathered on the staircase of the Municipal Chamber, downtown Rio, carrying posters and pictures which show their demands and the precarious state of health services. Doctors also mention the need for public admission exams, plans for career, promotions and salaries, and a minimum salary of $4.922, calculated according to the National Federation of Doctors.
