After a tense and difficult game that ended 1-1 and remained tied all the way to the end of the extra-time, Brazil beat on Saturday (Jun 28) the Chilean squad 3-2 on the penalties. The victory secures the five-time champion hosts to the round of 8, with a clash next Friday (Jul 4) at 5 pm in Fortaleza, at the Arena Castelão, against Colombia, which defeated Uruguay 2 -0 this Saturday.

In the first half, at the Mineirão Stadium, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil scored the opener in the 20th minute, with a header by David Luiz, who collected the ball after Thiago Silva’s corner kick. At first the referee considered declaring it an own goal by Chile’s Jara, who approached him to take the ball, but the goal was officially attributed to the Brazilian player.

With the opener, luck seemed to lean on the Brazilian side, but 31 minutes into the first half, Alexis Sánchez took advantage of a neglected Brazilian defense and leveled. Brazil had lost possession soon after a throw-in. Vargas stole the ball and Hulk brought it to Sánchez, who subsequently scored.

From then on, the struggle remained tense all the way to the end, with a yellow card to Chilean defenders Mena and Francisco Silva, due to more severe fouls. Chile proved more harmonious than the Brazilian squad, with stronger marking, more possession and successful passes, without, however, being able to score. Nice opportunities were also seen on Brazil’s side, when a shot from Daniel Alves was saved by the Chilean goalkeeper.

Early in the second half, Brazil’s Hulk managed to score, kicking the ball after it touched his shoulder. The goal, however, was disallowed. The referee erroneously agreed with the linesman, who argued Hulk had received the ball with his arm. The move also resulted in a yellow card to the striker, who will not be allowed to participate in Brazil’s next match. The draw took the duel to extra-time, which remained goalless throughout.

Penalty shootout

After the extra-time was over, the penalty kicks began. Only with the last kick was the result decided, as Jara missed it by hitting the crossbar. Scoring players on Brazil’s side during this part of the game were David Luiz, Marcelo and Neymar. William’s and Hulk’s attempts were unsuccessful.

As for Chile, Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar saved the first one from striker Pinilla, as well the second, by Alexis Sánches. Then midfielder Aránguiz scored, followed by Marcelo Diaz. Finally, Jara missed his chance, thus killing Chile’s hope to move to the round of 8.
