Germany defeated Portugal 4-0 in the World Cup’s first Group G match Monday (Jun 16). The game started at 1 pm, in Salvador, and had three of its goals scored during the first half.

Among the highlights was German striker Thomas Müller, 24, who scored three out of four of his team’s goals.

Germany is seen as a favorite among likely 2014 World Cup winners, and ranks third on the list of countries with the largest number of victories in the international football tournament. Germany won the competition in 1954, 1974 and 1900, and came second four times.

Portugal, on the other hand, in spite of their disastrous debut this year, and of never having been the victorious team in a World Cup, also features among the most popular ones, not least because of Cristiano Ronaldo, often referred to as the best player in the world.
