Uruguay beat Italy and qualify for the round of 16
Uruguay has succeeded in qualifying for the next round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup by beating Italy 1-0 on Tuesday (Jun 24) at Arena das Dunas, in Natal. The game was marked by a tense atmosphere, with not a single goal scored until 35 minutes into the second half. The Italian defense proved no match for defender Diego Godín, who nailed the decisive goal with his back, much to the Italians’ dismay.
Also as part of the Group D duels, Costa Rica, one of the most surprising teams in the tournament, tied it up with England in a goalless match in São Paulo. This means the Latin-American country holds the crown of the so-called Group of Death, made up of three world champions: Italy, Uruguay and England.
With the latest results, the number of champion squads going back home now amounts to three: Spain, Italy and England. And the knockout stage has not even started yet. On the other hand, Latin-American countries that secured a spot in the next phase total seven: Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia and Mexico – nearly half of the 16 national teams to advance to the next round. There is also Ecuador, whose qualification remains uncertain.
