Brazil vs Germany web’s most talked-about sporting event
Germany’s 7-1 victory over Brazil last Tuesday (Jul 8) was the sporting event most talked about on social media in internet history, said Matt Stone, head of FIFA’s Digital Department, during a press conference on Wednesday (9), at the Maracanã Stadium.
“Tweets amounted to 35 million. The most discussed event on this platform had been Super Bowl 38, with 24,9 million,” he noted, adding that the comments about the Super Bowl and the Oscar put together do not top the total of tweets about Brazil and Germany’s duel. The match also broke the tweet-per-minute record by reaching the 508,166-thousand mark after the fifth goal conceded by Brazil—beating the previous record by nearly 100 thousand.
On Facebook, the clash was also the most discussed World Cup-related topic, with over 66 million users posting 200 million comments about the match.
FIFA’s representative further stated that this has been the most interactive World Cup ever. The federation’s Facebook page received 447 million hits, and the platform created by the organization so that users could watch the games live and interact online reported 230 million users by the end of the group stage. “The figure is equivalent to a crowd capable of filling up 3,078 stadiums like the Maracanã,” Stone pointed out. He went on to say that, after the final, the profile of FIFA’s platform visitors will be detailed.
Delia Fischer, the head of media of the sport’s governing body, revealed that the game between Germany and Brazil registered the highest ratings in the history of German television. “It was an average of 32.6 million TV sets turned on during the match,” she said.
