Eduardo Campos buried in heartfelt ceremony
The body of former presidential candidate Eduardo Campos was buried Sunday (Aug. 17) in a modest grave, surrounded only by flowers. The ceremony went on amid fireworks and cries of “Eduardo, soldier of the Brazilian people”.
On the streets, on the sidewalks, on top of the graves, fans of the deceased former Pernambuco state governor were all jostling for a glimpse of the burial on every square foot of St. Amaro Cemetery. The nearby roads were filled with caravans of buses from various cities throughout the state. Military Police report 150,000 people attended the funeral, which took place in the seat of government of Pernambuco, where Campos was a governor for seven years.
“We came to extend our condolences and show our appreciation for all good things he did for us,” said 26-year-old Mikaela Kalina, who left Ribeirão, approximately 100 km from the capital Recife, in an eight-bus convoy.
Next to the coffin stood Campos's family members, friends and fellow PSB party members. Campos was married with five children, including a seven-month old
baby. His body was buried along with that of his grandfather, Miguel Arraes, who died nine years ago also on August 13. Arraes supported agrarian reform struggles, but was arrested as the military coup was staged in 1964 and exiled to Algeria. Like his grandson, he served more than one term as the governor of Pernambuco.
