The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) signed a $5.13 billion agreement with Swedish company Saab on Friday (Oct. 24) to buy 36 Gripen NG (Next Generation) fighter jets.

The contract involves purchasing 28 single-seat and eight two-seat aircraft, and goes on to cover training for Brazilian pilots and technicians in Sweden, logistics support, and technology transfers to Brazil's industry, to take place over the course of ten years according to Saab.

Brazil will collaborate in the development stage and be responsible for the two-seaters. “Developing and producing Gripen NG jets will also create thousands of jobs in the country,” a FAB statement read.

With product deliveries planned to take place only between 2019 and 2024, Brazil's Air Force is also negotiating with the Swedish Air Force to temporary lease less advanced Gripen C/D fighters for use until the new jets are available.

Brazil chose the Swedish fighters in December 2013, against the US Boeing F-18E/F Super Hornet and France's Dassault Rafale F3.
