Brazilian maker unveils new military cargo jet
Brazil's aircraft maker Embraer has unveiled a prototype of the KC-390 military cargo jet, the largest and most advanced aircraft ever built in Brazil according to the Ministry of Defense. The project is as a collaboration between Embraer and Brazil's Air Force (FAB).
“This is one of those moments that fill us with pride. This aircraft is a marvel of technological advancement,” said Defense Minister Celso Amorim.
Embraer is planning to try it on ground tests before its air debut later this year. “KC-390 will be FAB's backbone transport aircraft. It can fly the Amazon and the Antarctic alike. And the turbojets provide more speed to complete its mission,” said Air Force commander Juniti Saito.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the KC-390 can quickly take troops anywhere in country. Moreover, it can carry disassembled military equipment, including the new Guarani armored personnel carrier made for the Brazilian Army. It will replace the C-130 Hercules airlifter used in search and aerial refueling applications.
Embraer representatives revealed that this is the first of two prototypes that will be used in “ground and flight tests and certification.” According to the company, it is designed for tactical military transport and aerial refueling, and “sets an important technology and innovation milestone in Brazil's aerospace industry.” KC-390 was designed to have lower operating costs and to transport and launch cargo and troops, fight bush fires, and operate in search and rescue and other missions.
Last May, Embraer and FAB signed a production agreement for the aircraft series, with 28 models to be delivered in ten years. The Defense Ministry said the first shipment is scheduled for 2016. Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Czech Republic, and Portugal are potential markets.
