No alcohol on polling Sunday
At least 15 Brazilian states and the Federal District will enforce an alcohol prohibition policy during the general elections next Sunday (Oct. 5), when the population will vote for president, senators, state governors, and federal and state deputies (legislators). Since there are no countrywide laws addressing the sale of alcohol, the issue will be up to the public security department in each state. Six states have already decided to ban alcohol sales as of Saturday (Oct. 4).
In the Federal District and nine states (Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Ceará, Pará, Rio Grande do Norte, Tocantins, Piauí, and Paraná), the ban becomes effective in the early morning hours on Sunday. In a statement, the Regional Electoral Court of the Federal District warned that any violations will be treated as criminal disobedience, the drinks will be seized, and the offending business will be closed.
Acre, Espírito Santo, Santa Catarina, São Paulo, Sergipe, and Pernambuco are the states that have not banned the sale of alcoholic beverages on the polling day. And the state governments of Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Goiás, Rondônia, and Paraíba have not reached a decision yet.
