Brazil and Spain to cooperate in organ transplantation
Brazil signed an agreement with Spain Tuesday (Nov. 11) to share experiences in organ transplantation. According to Brazil's Ministry of Health, Spain is a global leader in organ transplantation, with one of the most advanced public programs in the field.
The purpose of the cooperation is to enhance Brazil's experiences in groundbreaking areas such as multiple organ and dead-heart transplantation where the donor has no chances of surviving. In such cases, even though the heart has stopped beating, there are techniques to revive and reuse hearts and other solid organs including kidneys and lungs. Also planned as part of the agreement are a review of applicable legislation and regulations and bilateral meetings with insight from field experts.
In 2013, 23,457 transplant surgeries were performed in Brazil. With this partnership, Brazil's professionals working under the state-run Unified Health System (SUS) – which accounts for 95% of transplants performed in the country – can learn from successful experiences in Spain, including a program for dead-heart donations.
