Brazil currently has a 202,768,562 population, according to an estimate from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released Tuesday (Dec. 30). There are about 12 million more people than reported by the 2010 census, reflecting a 5.9% increase.
The Southeast region has the largest population, 85.1 million, whereas the Central West has the smallest – 15.2 million. The North region has a population of 17.3 million, whereas 56.1 million people live in the Northeast. The population of the South region is 29 million.
São Paulo is the most populous among 27 states, at 44 million. Roraima is the least populous, with 496,900 inhabitants. The smallest of all federal units spanning 5.7 million square kilometers, the Federal District is home to 2.8 million people.
