Vinicius and Tom were the names chosen for the mascots of the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games which will take place in Rio de Janeiro. The names got 323,000 votes, 44% of the total.
The choice is a tribute to two renowned Brazilian musicians and songwriters of the Bossa Nova movement, Vinicius de Moraes and Antonio Carlos Jobim (a.k.a. Tom Jobim). Their partnership produced “The Girl from Ipanema”, one of the most world-famous of all Brazilian songs.
Vinicius, the Olympics mascot, is yellow with cartoon-like features, and represents Brazil's diverse fauna. Tom is a blue, leaf-haired mascot, and represents the country's exuberant natural landscape in the Paralympic Games.
