AIDS death rate down in Brazil
Advertising campaigns have helped educate Brazilians about AIDS prevention -
The AIDS mortality rate dropped 13% in ten years in Brazil, going from 6.4 deaths in every group of 100,000 people in 2003 to 5.7 deaths in every such group in 2013. The epidemic spread fastest among people aged 15-24.
The disease is considered to have epidemiologically stabilized in the country, with a HIV detection rate of around 20.4 cases for every 100,000 people, approximately equivalent to 39,000 new cases every year. Since the 1980s, 757,000 AIDS cases have been reported in Brazil.
The government estimated that between 2005 and 2013, the total of Brazilians with access to anti-retroviral therapy more than doubled, going from 165,000 to 400,000. A Health Ministry ordinance published Tuesday (Mar. 17) included Darunavir 600 mg drug among anti-retroviral therapies available to HIV-positive adults from the government-run healthcare system (SUS), which provides public, free-of-charge health services in the country.
Currently 22 drugs are available from SUS for HIV patients, 12 of which are produced in Brazil.
